Goodbye to Wine O'clock: Stay Creative, Even After Having Kids

As a parent, it's easy to lose sight of our own passions and creativity. We often prioritize our children's needs over our own, and our creativity can fade over time.

However, suppressing or stepping away from your creativity can lead to feelings of frustration, burnout, and can even lead to unhealthy coping habits, like excessive screen time, overeating, negative self-talk, or turning to alcohol.

That last point about turning to alcohol is one thing that I see a lot of parents around me getting sucked into. This 'alcohol parent' culture may seem like fun and a quick fix, but it doesn't address the underlying need for self-expression and fulfillment.

The 'alcohol parent' culture has just become a popular way to cope with the stress and the demands of parenting. It’s often described as a harmless and even a humorous escape. I constantly hear phrases and see post on social media like "it's wine o'clock" or "I'm going to need a drink after this".

But while a glass of wine may offer temporary relief to some, relying on alcohol to cope can mask deeper issues and prevent you from addressing your true needs. It can lead to dependency, health problems, and doesn't solve the underlying feeling of being unfulfilled.

Instead of turning to alcohol or the other unhealthy habits I listed, finding healthy outlets for your stress can bring more lasting fulfillment.

I think the biggest and most undervalued outlet is your creativity! It can help you reconnect with yourself and model positive coping strategies for your children too.

Here are a few tips to help you stay creative, even after having kids.

  1. Make Time for Yourself: Set aside dedicated time for your creative pursuits. Whether it's early in the morning, during nap time, or after bedtime, carve out a space for yourself.
  2. Art Therapy: If you have access to an art therapist, please try it out! It can be so helpful to have the guidance when you're struggling with the demands of parenthood. Having someone walk you through your emotions and how you can use art to express your feelings can be so freeing.
  3. Involve Your Kids: Involve your kids in your creative activities. Not only does this allow you to continue your creativity, but it also sparks a love for creativity in your children.
  4. Find a Support System: Connect with other creative parents. Join online communities, local groups, or host art parties with friends. Sharing your journey with others can help with motivation to keep going.
  5. Carve Out Time to Play: Creativity is play, and many adults forget how to play. Having kids is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the joy of play. Play with your children, whether it's building with blocks, dancing, painting, or making up stories. This not only nurtures your creativity but also shows your kids that play is a healthy and essential part of life.
  6. Be Kind to Yourself: Remember, it's okay if things don't go perfectly. Creativity is about the process, not the outcome. Be kind to yourself and celebrate your efforts no matter how small.

Your creativity is a big part of who you are. By nurturing it, you're not only taking care of yourself but also setting a beautiful example for your children.
