Getting Into A Flow State

What is flow state?

Flow state is a state of mind where an artist or creative person is fully absorbed in their work. Feeling completely focused and immersed in the creative process. It is a state of deep concentration. It's a place where an artist is able to produce their best work without distraction.

During the artistic flow state, an artist experiences a sense of timelessness. Where hours can pass by without the artist realizing it. As a neurodiverse person with ADHD this is also called hyperfocus. This hyperfocus or flow state gives me a sense of satisfaction and control over my creative process. In this state I feel like I produce my best work.

How to get into a flow state?

I've been experimenting over the past year with routines and habits that can help me get into a state of flow. Getting into an artistic flow state can be challenging, but here are some tips that I found to help:

  1. Start with a clear intention: Begin by setting a clear intention for what you want to create. Having a clear goal in mind will help you focus your attention and give you a sense of direction.
  2. Eliminate distractions: Turn off your phone, close your computer, and find a quiet space where you can concentrate. Eliminating distractions will help you stay focused and engaged in the creative process. (As a parent this one is tricky when our son is home so I plan for this focus when he's at school.)
  3. Set a 25 minute timer : Setting a specific time limit can help you stay on task. I like to use the pomodoro method when starting a new project. I helps to keep my brain focused on the task for 25 minutes. Then when the timer goes off I can take a 5 minute break or decide to keep working if I've gotten into a flow state.
  4. Follow your instincts: Don't worry too much about making mistakes or following rules. Instead, trust your instincts and allow your creativity to guide you. Remember that creativity is about exploration and experimentation, so be open to trying new things.
  5. Practice regularly: Like any skill, getting into the flow state takes practice. Try to set aside time each day to work on your art. Even if it's just for a few minutes. The more you practice, the easier it will be to get into the flow state.

Remember that the artistic flow state is a state of mind that requires focus, dedication, and practice. With time and effort, you can learn to enter this state more easily.
